About Rogue Sharks‍

Rogue Sharks is a global lifestyle brand that began in 2021 as a digital art project aimed at intersecting emerging technologies and ocean preservation. With a top traded shark inspired NFT collection on the Solana blockchain and a loyal and diverse community Rogue Sharks aims to drive real impact for our oceans. The Rogue Sharks Founder explains, “Since day one our mission has been to build a brand and community focused on driving real social change through the power of NFTs and Web3. We need to protect and restore the ocean as if our lives depend on it, because they do. Partnering with OCEARCH was an easy decision for us after learning about their extensive work in the shark preservation space.”

From the very day Rogue Sharks was founded, we have been very keen on the ocean preservation aspect. The original roadmap that we released to our community, already outlined a $100,000 donation to support marine life.

“Since day one our mission has been to build a brand and community focused on driving real social change through the power of NFTs and Web3. We need to protect and restore the ocean as if our lives depend on it, because they do. Partnering with OCEARCH was a match made in heaven after learning about their extensive work in the shark preservation space.
Our success is linked to the sustainability of planet Earth, and we want to utilize the Rogue Sharks’ platform to truly make a difference for sharks and ocean species that play a critical role in the health of our ocean.“

- King Rogue, Rogue Sharks Founder and CEO

What we were missing to expand this particular part of our vision was a strong partnership in the ocean preservation sphere. OCEARCH’s mission is to accelerate the ocean’s return to balance and abundance through fearless innovations in critical scientific research, education, outreach, and policy using unique collaborations of individuals and organizations all around the world. Their 42 ocean research expeditions around the world have allowed them to collect previously unattainable data on our sharks and our oceans. Their technologically advanced brand positioning harmonizes well with the NFT industry, that we operate in. Through this partnership, Rogue Sharks will be introducing OCEARCH to the world of Solana NFTs with their very own digital collectible collection, in addition to donating at least $125,000 to fund their vessel operations on expeditions.

Are NFTs Environmentally Friendly?

A common theme in the NFT, crypto and web3 opposition is the concern regarding the necessity to explore this path of bleeding-edge technology. Firstly, we need to establish the premise that not every cryptocurrency, or blockchain for that matter is created equal. In fact, they are all designed to serve a very specific purpose. In the realm of NFTs, the Ethereum (ETH) network has occupied the spotlight in the broader NFT community for the last couple of years as a pioneer of the NFT space. ETH, as well as Bitcoin (BTC) have been among the first blockchains are still frequently criticized for their energy usage. Rogue Sharks is an NFT collection on Solana, a “third generation” network, characterized by environmentally friendly, high capacity transactions. Unlike earlier generation networks, such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, Solana works incredibly efficient, both in transactional cost, as well as the environmental impact.

Solana’s Energy Use Report from November 2021 sheds some light on how the blockchain performs in comparison to other networks, as well as to more comprehensible items and services of everyday use. Energy and climate advisor Robert Murphy was contracted in May of last year by the Solana Foundation, in order to more clearly frame the environmental impact of their network. But first of all, the fundamental buildings blocks of Solana need to be examined. Essential to virtually anything a user wants to do inside the Solana network is tied to transactions. From purchasing an NFT, buying or selling cryptocurrencies or sending money from one wallet to another, all of those activities represent transactions. Because Solana is a proof of stake network (PoS), its security is not dependent on high energy usage, therefore any transactions energy consumption can be greatly reduced. Neither is there a need for computing power intensive mining operations and combined with other key technical innovations, all of which are outlined in Solana’s Whitepaper, every aforementioned activity is extremely energy efficient compared to previous blockchain generations.

The data published in 2021, provides a dynamic analysis that can be recalculated as the network grows. The Solana Foundation determined that, at the network size benchmarked in 2021, a single Solana transaction takes 0.00051 kWh, or 1,836 Joules, of energy. However, those numbers will likely not tell anybody apart from electrical engineers much, which is why the report has included some every day life comparisons. A single transaction on Solana takes less energy than two Google searches, and 24 times less energy than fully charging the average smartphone. Solana’s dedication to become even more environmentally friendly does not end here however:

Even with this low energy consumption, the Solana Foundation vows to even further reduce the Solana ecosystem’s environmental impact. By the end of 2021, the Foundation plans to introduce a program to help make Solana’s validator network carbon neutral and offset the footprint of the ecosystem.

What’s Next For This Joined Venture?

As their industry expert, consultant, and networking node, we will work together to rise to the top of the NFT industry. Not only will it enable us to generate funds to achieve our individual goals, but it gives us the opportunity to leverage the favorable position that NFTs have claimed in the public domain, in order to bring more attention to the field of ocean preservation. This is an exciting new chapter for Rogue Sharks as we further establish our brand outside the NFT space as a force for positive change in the real world. This partnership with OCEARCH will place us right next to big names like Sea World, YETI, and Costa on their boat, where much of their viral content is shot.

Annual Rogue Charity Gala

One perk of being OCEARCH’s corporate partners is the opportunity to host events with them on their expedition vessel. We plan to host an annual charity gala in the name of the Solana NFT community. We want to share our vision with the broader crypto landscape to add value to the whole ecosystem and cement Rogue Sharks as a household name. There are many projects who could benefit from the exposure such an event could be gaining, whether it is through traditional, or crypto-specific news outlets. Projects of any size could donate their NFTs rather than cash donations, which could be auctioned off live on the event site with bottle service and catering to set the mood for a real event.
